NC RESIDENCY
Residency Determination Service (RDS) is now required by law to qualify for in-state tuition and/or to be considered for NC state grants at all NC community colleges, public universities, and private universities.
RDS takes about 15-20 minutes to complete online. Click the button below to see what info you should gather.
- Gather these documents/info:
- From student:
- Social Security #, date of birth, drivers license #
- From parent(s)/legal guardian(s):
- Social Security # or some other identification #s, dates of birth
- Drivers license #s and vehicle registration info
- Tax filing status (when was the last time they filed taxes, was it through mail or electronically)
- (Maybe) Employer information, voter registration info
- You might need to upload pictures of documents for more proof of residency, like electricity, water, or another bill from about 1 year ago
- Go to ncresidency.org
- Log in, and follow the screen instructions to complete the determination.
- Read the questions carefully and answer carefully (no guessing)
- You can exit at any time and it'll automatically save and you can pick up where you left off.
- Once you're done, you should get immediate notification whether you qualify for in-state tuition. If not, let me know and we can fix it. There is a Reconsideration/Appeal process in that case.
